We were standing in the kitchen one morning last week. I was watching my little Congolese crazy play on the kitchen floor as I made her breakfast.
(She eats peanuts for breakfast…don’t enter me into sainthood quite yet…”made” is a strong word)
The Lord has been challenging me lately to be more intentional with my precious snotty nosed one…and I felt Him that morning pushing me to ask her questions….engage her…and so I did.
“Nima…. what do you want to be when you grow up?”
She stood up from playing and looked up at me…very dramatically (she has a flair for it) and with a grand Broadway-type hand gesture (that she probably picked up from Frozen…for the love) she grinned from ear to ear and said…
“A DANGER.”
To which I replied,
“To society?”
“Yes maam,” she said, grin plastered and eyes wide.
Lord help us. We need the Saints to pray.
This day was followed by one of the hardest days I have ever experienced as a parent. A day when I watched anger sweep over my daughter and transform her into a different child. I watched her tremble and scream and flail around and I sat helplessly. I prayed over her, I begged God to calm her down. I wept over the fact that this anger felt like her heritage, her past, rearing its head…it felt foreign and I was scared that I didn’t have the skillset to handle it.
This went on for hours. It was like World War 3 in our home…America versus Africa…and Africa was winning.
As I sat on our couch after finally getting her to calm down the Lord clearly spoke to me. He met me in my anger and frustration and confusion and revealed to me a truth about my child that brought hope and peace.
He reminded me that He knit her together, regardless of what her heritage was, He designed her every part and every inch of her brain, heart, soul and spirit. He spoke to me and said:
“Do you see that anger? That is the enemy using something that I gave her. I have purposed her life in a way that a holy-anger will be powerful and will be key to her calling…the enemy is just using it now for something it wasn’t created for. Point her to me and when she knows me I will make her unstoppable for My Kingdom.”
(paraphrased of course…the Lord speaks much more eloquently and piercing than I can put into words)
She was made zesty by her Papa…and He did it on purpose.
A danger to society…would that actually be that bad? A danger to the status quo…a danger to the way society is used to going…a danger to the enemy.
When my daughter was wired together and knit in her mother’s womb, thousands of miles away from my arms, she was put together ON PURPOSE with some very unique and intentional personality traits, talents and abilities. Nothing about my daughter is a coincidence. Her zest for life, her love of people, her wide gapped grin, her deep and contagious laugh, her sensitivity to emotions and people who are hurting, her anger (that sometimes threatens to make her an actual danger…back away people)…. All of it was ON PURPOSE by her Heavenly Creator. He smiled as he knit her together because He knew that if she would surrender ALL of those things…those things that He gave her…back to Him…she would indeed be:
A DANGER TO SOCIETY.
I believe that, one day, when the world intersects with my daughter it will be shaken loose from bondage and blindness. I believe that she will have a righteous anger that gives her the ability to fight against injustice. I believe that her beauty will give her a platform, her flair for drama will put her in the center of people’s attention. I believe that her broken and fragmented beginnings will be used to bring many to the feet of Jesus with their own orphaned hearts…and they will find their Father.
She has the ability to be a danger to the enemy because of the every way that she was wired and put together.
What about you?
What are your unique wirings, quirks, personality traits? Do you look at them the way that our Father does…as very valuable and purposeful and powerful when injected with the Holy Spirit?
Are there things that have been God breathed into your life that the enemy is using to wreak havoc? If you think about it, what better way to wedge his way into our life than by using our bent…our wiring…the very things we can not separate ourselves from? If he can gain territory there, he can have victory in our inmost being.
We are wired to be in relationship with one another, yet many of us are emotionally bankrupt and isolated. We are wired with sexual desire, that is God breathed and beautiful; is it any wonder that sexual sin is rampant among those who follow Jesus and shame and judgement plague our lives?
Do you have a gift of leadership that the enemy has turned into control issues or a lack of trust?
Do you have a way with words, a gifting, that you are using to tear others down with?
Do you have compassion that has turned into an inability to not be needed?
All beautiful things, capable of producing life that, when put in the wrong hands can do damage.
Don’t you understand that there is not one single thing about your personality, your tendencies, your bent, your quirks, your physical looks, your interests and passions that have not been placed there by your Father?
And do you know why He designed you from head to toe the way that He did? Not just so you could be uniquely you and live a good life and die…but so that you, all of you, could be a part of bringing Heaven to Earth, lost ones home; His Kingdom come.
YOU were designed to be a danger to this world….a danger to its darkness…to its brokenness…because with YOU comes the power of healing and redemption and forgiveness and the wrong being made right.
It’s time that we reclaim what is rightfully ours, what has been given to us, and give it right back to the One who gave it.
Being made in His image is no small thing. And we have been…in the image of God did He make us.
May we live lives that reflect the actual power that we have been given to walk in. May our lives feel like a danger to those we encounter…may we threaten their mind sets, their old habits and sin…may we threaten the complacency and apathy that they are living in and push them to know Him more.
May we take risks, step out when it doesn’t make sense. May we lay hands to heal, may we pray for visions and prophecy, may we take Him at His word that we are cherished and valuable to Him.
May we no longer give our precious gifts, our minds, our sense of humor, our imagination to the who who exists to steal, kill and destroy; may we return it all to the One who will breathe life into and use THE WHOLE OF US to change the world.
He’s waiting to make you a danger…will you let Him?
